When baby DD was born in Bangladesh, he was diagnosed with hypospadias, a congenital condition affecting the urinary opening. Like many parents receiving this diagnosis for the first time, his family was overwhelmed with anxiety and uncertainty. They began searching online for reliable information and expert treatment options and discovered Hypospadias Foundation in Navi Mumbai, India.
When he was just 6 months old, his parents contacted our team. During a detailed telephonic consultation, we explained the nature of his condition, the available treatment options, and the ideal timing for hypospadias surgery. Reassured by the guidance they received, the family planned to visit our centre when he turned one.
Unfortunately, international travel challenges delayed their plans, and they were only able to come to India for surgery when he was 2 years old.
A Complex Hypospadias Case Requiring a Staged Repair
On evaluation, DD had distal penile hypospadias. Although the urinary opening was located distally, he had significant penile chordee (curvature), making a single-stage repair unsuitable. A two-stage hypospadias repair was planned to achieve the best functional and cosmetic outcome.
Stage 1 Surgery
The primary goal of the first stage was complete correction of the penile curvature. This involved complete correction of chordee by urethral plate division, proximal urethral mobilization, ventral corporotomies and dermal graft placement for ventral penile lengthening. The hypospadias surgery was successful, resulting in a completely straight penis and preparing the tissues for definitive urethral reconstruction. Stage 2 Surgery
One year after the first procedure, DD underwent the second-stage urethroplasty to reconstruct the urethra. The surgery was completed successfully, and his postoperative recovery was smooth. He achieved an excellent urinary stream along with a natural cosmetic appearance, providing an outstanding functional and aesthetic result.
